The eight muscles of the human tongue are classified as either intrinsic or extrinsic. The four intrinsic muscles act to change the shape of the tongue, and are not attached to any bone. The four extrinsic muscles act to change the position of the tongue, and are anchored to bone.

Extrinsic[edit]

The extrinsic muscles originate from bone and extend to the tongue. Their main functions are altering the tongue's position allowing for protrusion, retraction, and side-to-side movement.^[3]

1. Genioglossus, which arises from the mandible and protrudes the tongue. It is also known as the "safety muscle" of the tongue since it is the only muscle having the forward action.
2. Hyoglossus, which arises from the hyoid bone and depresses the tongue
3. Styloglossus, which arises from the styloid process of the temporal bone and elevates and retracts the tongue
4. Palatoglossus, which arises from the palatine aponeurosis, and depresses the soft palate, moves the palatoglossal fold towards the midline, and elevates the back of the tongue.

Intrinsic[edit]

Four paired intrinsic muscles of the tongue originate and insert within the tongue, running along its length. These muscles alter the shape of the tongue by: lengthening and shortening it, curling and uncurling its apex and edges, and flattening and rounding its surface. This provides shape, and helps facilitate speech, swallowing, and eating.^[3]

1. The superior longitudinal muscle runs along the superior surface of the tongue under the mucous membrane, and elevates, assists in retraction of, or deviates the tip of the tongue. It originates near the epiglottis, the hyoid bone, from the median fibrous septum.
2. The inferior longitudinal muscle lines the sides of the tongue, and is joined to the styloglossus muscle.
3. The vertical muscle is located in the middle of the tongue, and joins the superior and inferior longitudinal muscles.
4. The transverse muscle divides the tongue at the middle, and is attached to the mucous membranes that run along the sides.

Blood supply[edit]

The tongue receives its blood supply primarily from the lingual artery, a branch of the external carotid artery. The lingual veins, drain into the internal jugular vein. The floor of the mouth also receives its blood supply from the lingual artery.^[3]There is also a secondary blood supply to the tongue from the tonsillar branch of the facial artery and the ascending pharyngeal artery.

An area in the neck sometimes called Pirogov's triangle is formed by the intermediate tendon of the digastric muscle, the posterior border of the mylohyoid muscle, and thehypoglossal nerve.^[4][5] The lingual artery is a good place to stop severe hemorrage from the tongue.

Innervation[edit]

Innervation of the tongue consists of motor fibers, special sensory fibers for taste, and general sensory fibers for sensation.^[3]

• Motor supply for all intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue is supplied by efferent motor nerve fibers from the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII), with the exception of thepalatoglossus. The palatoglossus is innervated by the vagus nerve (CN X).^[3]

Innervation of taste and sensation is different for the anterior and posterior part of the tongue because they are derived from different embryological structures (pharyngeal arch1 and pharyngeal arch 3 and 4, respectively).^[6]

  • Taste: chorda tympani branch of the facial nerve (CN VII) via special visceral afferent fibers
  • Sensation: lingual branch of the mandibular division (V3) of the trigeminal nerve (CN V) via general somatic afferent fibers
• Posterior one third of tongue:
• Taste and sensation: glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) via a mixture of special and general visceral afferent fibers.

Law Codex of Vinodol or Vinodol statute (Croatian: Vinodolski zakonik) is one of the oldest law texts written in the Chakavian dialect ofCroatian language and is among the oldest Slavic codes.^[1][2][3] It was written in the Glagolitic alphabet. It was originally compiled in 1288 by a commission of 42 members in Novi Vinodolski, a town on the Adriatic Sea coast in Croatia, located south of Crikvenica, Selce and Bribir and north of Senj. However, the codex itself is preserved in a 16th-century copy.

The statute[edit]

A paragraph was set to define the relation between the dukes and the peasantry of the region.^[4] It is the oldest among all Croatian city statutes, which represented an agreement between the people of Vinodol and their new liege lords, the Princes of Krk. It contains important information about the feudal law in this area which had replaced the tribal customs of an earlier period. The Vinodol Statute provide a rare contemporary picture of the life and political conditions in medieval Europe. The oldest regulations concerning public health in western Croatia are preserved within the Vinodol Statute. Today, it is stored in the National and University Library Zagreb.

The Vinodol Statute confirms status of the Vinodol as an administrative and political center from the 13th century. The text of the statute is preserved as a copy from the 16th century.

Editions[edit]

The first printed edition was prepared in 1843 by Antun Mažuranić in the third yearly volume of the journal Kolo. Osip Bodyansky translated it in 1846 to Russian and Anna Mikhailovna Evreinova edited the 1878 edition in Saint Petersburg, with facsimile of the original as well as Latin and Cyrillic transliteration. Vatroslav Jagić published it in 1880, both the original and a Russian translation with philological and legal commentary. Wacław Maciejowski translated it in 1856 to Polish, Jules Preux translated it in 1896 to French,Mark Kostrenčić translated it in 1931 to German and Lujo Margetić translated it in 1981/1982 to Italian, and in 1983 to English. Josip Bratulić edited the 1988 facsimile edition with commentary and a dictionary.

To whom it may bother that a person cannot get the same prescription that one has been taking for more than ten years on the done.  No problem and all the appointments go fine, than one day the new Doctor says that its the wrong dosage, worse, saying that all the Doctors that you have ever had are just wrong.  So, off one goes to the blood draw with that wonder piece of paper, and, a bunch of those wonderful coded boxes are checked.  Normal, yes, so off to the Draw Center one goes.

There it is the time between, on average the call comes to the hard line phone but this time its rude and indifferent, even going as far as to treat you as an idiot.  The new appointment with ones new doctor gets made, then one waits some more.

The date comes to day and then the hour.  One waits some more, just now in the Waiting Room actually.  The pictures and magazines aid to the passing seat on the Office with coughing, depressed persons.  That sliding door opens, "excuse me, please fill these out before the doctor can see you".  Plodding across the dull carpeted floor one stands at the window display, here, here and here I also need to see your insurance card your co-pay is blah, blah, blah.

No pause, the now clipboard with irritating falling off papers, the pen that one is handed, you wonder??  Did I not fill all of these messages out a billion trillion times a qua-billion other times??, oh well, patience whens the grade as that is the degree of must to accomplish this absolutely necessary but annoying classical life duty, why you ask, it's my Thyroid and it refuses to work for itself bringing tired a new meaning into reality in ones life.

Asking for the Doctor in the Office one is told that a separate appointment would have to be made and in the case of this particular prescription they will only say the same thing.  The conversation done the prescription written and then filled because won gives it no other grace.

Months, years and many many trips to cramping and much more, the calls begin to, interrupted the entire blood draw darning, now repeat above and done.

No response, just waiting again, tired and worn out wondering why a Nurse Practitioner and their Office insist I get my blood drawn again on top of the fact that every single time you compromise your body with a pin prick or actual draw you endanger yourself with so much these days.  So, in order to make my Mind feel less stressed you begin to question why on Earth would a Office force the payment of both body, mind and sole to the cost priced of all this worry??. Answer?? I don't know.

So to my last Doctor, Dr. Zacharias, I love you and miss you terribly and I am reminded of those antibiotics that were meant to be working in the Five Day period, they were new but good, I said Okay.  Than three weeks later I came back sicker than I was the first and you felt so bad and I said I still don't feel good.  You said I need to give you the old prescription of antibiotics because those Five Day New Prescriptions have made no . . . you get the point.  You than said why didn't you come back and I said because you said give it a chance they'll work and I said are you sure and you said yes.  I fondly remind the World of this story because I really love Dr. Zacharias in Sacramento, California, he made all my appointments painless and precise to the work of the Physician with a bit of a little teasing.

To this bother of a Post today I day to the Odd Fellows, I have had less Doctors than one would imagine, because I stay with them for reasons as I have already written as done deals above.  The reason we part ways is usually for those passing on but in Doctors Zacharias case, I ran out of money and energy to drive to Sacramento to go and see him, oh for the hi way at you see the emptiness of smaller than a Tier because its a clean sweep.
