Artist Statement(s)
Laine Justice is a painter, sculptor, collagist and story teller. With a keen interest in materials science and traditional studio practice, her work is characterized by dense, layered mark making producing thickly tangled internal narratives. Chiefly working with powdered pigments and oil on silk, she frequently incorporates gold leaf, sections of fine graphite drawing, swarovski crystal, and individually placed fragments of antique glitter with painstaking attention to detail. Landscape elements are peopled with eyes, ears, and limbs of half-hidden animal composite creatures.

OUT COME THE DIVS! [2013]

"My divs are ghosts, monsters, giants, spirit animals and gods. They are magical composite creatures interwoven into every part of the world, hidden in clouds, in tree trunks, in rocks and in the wind - what one might see if time stood still and everything we felt became physically embodied in the world around us. The really early iterations of divs where good spirits - creatures of light - later they where rendered as demons, the devil. To the casual observer they can be elusive. Some are more important than others. The more you look, the more apparent they become.

These paintings are loosely based around the 12c Persian poet Nizami's "Khamsa" (The Quintet). Out Come the Divs! is my epic sequel to the story of Mejnun and Layla. It encompasses the world before night, the strewing of stars, the delivery of daybreak and... everything in between. There is a specific order they go in, and all eight paintings reference early myths and legends from various cultures. One or two for each painting, in fact." -LJ

#foryouilovemore [2013]

#foryouilovemore, a visual poem created in the Kakame tradition of the Papuan Gulf, begins and ends within the exact moment we feel scared - and consciously choose to turn away from a nightmare, real or imagined, and kick a pesadilla to the dust.

...on Scroll Paintings...[2013]

These paintings are 50 feet long so they are quite demanding when it comes to sharing them over the interweb. I have begun to animate them in order to share them with a wider audience.

Installed they are suspended in a room of any shape--hung from clothes lines the scrolls droop and double back on themselves forming 3-dimensional installations. Much like the series "Out Come the Divs!", each scroll is a developing narrative of cryptic puzzles and animal composites. These scrolls also function as diagrams and maps for my next series in oil, a body of work loosely based on the "Battle of Mara" and the beings who inhabit the Himaphan Forest.

Each scroll is eventually housed in its own horizontal book display box. Made entirely of wood with a glass viewing window, these boxes function like old viewfinders, and will allow viewers to manually click the scroll forward a quarter of an inch a day for a year.

MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH MR FOX[2014]

In January of 2014, I borrowed a freeze dried fox. For the following year I drew Mr Fox over 150 times in a search to learn about decision making, so that I might make better choices with the marks I make in the future. Graphite studies, conte crayon, watercolors in sepia made by bamboo stick, four foot long sumi ink brushes, and finally pinky painting; these restrictions on materials, method, or both, taught me more than I ever could have learned had I drawn Mr Fox the way I might have automatically set up to do. I believe the practice of life study - looking deeply and translating what is before us - is critical skill in all forms of creativity, no matter how unrelated they might seem. To this day life study remains one of my favorite activities and is a vital part of my studio practice.

TIME STANDS STILL & THE AIR TURNS TO MOUNTAINS [2009-2020]
..."What if you baked a cake..and ruined the world?"...

On the make since 2009, Time Stands Still & The Air Turns to Mountains is a large format, contemporary illuminated manuscript for children (and adults;). In the tradition of persian miniatures such as The Book of KingsThe Collective Works of Hafiz and The Quintet, illuminated manuscripts such as The Book of Hours and The Book of Kells, nursery rhymes such as Mother Goose and Laine's own version of puzzle painting... all thirty three 31 x 41" book plates, bound into a book so heavy it requires wheels, remain in various stages of completion.

The making of an illuminated manuscript calls for the creation of many sketches, drawings, cartoons, clay figurines and notes that will never be in the big book itself. These collected works, also known as The world that is Sea of Suddens, encompass years of study and are forever growing.

There are many people -poets, calligraphers, videographers, and book makers- that have lent their knowledge to this vision. Their contributions do not go unnoticed. The world that is Sea of Suddens, and its illuminated manuscript Time Stands Still & The Air Turns to Mountains are proudly, Milk Monster Studios first production. We cant wait to share it with you!! ETA 2020!
